Amar'e Stoudemire Spreads Green
Amar'e Stoudemire of the Phoenix Suns isn't your average NBA All-Star. Sure he's tall and dunks the ball like a man possessed, but his passion goes far beyond the hardwood. How far? Would you believe Sierra Leone? The West African country, according to Wikipedia, is the lowest ranked country on the Human Development Index and the seventh lowest on the Human Poverty Index. Things are not good.
While in Sierra Leone Amar'e helped to fund and create clean water wells which will provide fresh water to many neglected areas in the region.
Stoudemire, whose Each One Teach One Foundation website will launch in December, did this as a concerned individual and not part of an NBA project (which do many good things in their own right). He has met with the President and other leaders of Sierra Leone to discuss his building a "green" academy to encourage education and athletics.
Says Amar'e, "This is a trip that I had been looking forward to taking my whole life. We had already begun to help the communities in Sierra Leone, and it was great to see the efforts in person. One water well built provides water for 450 people, so as you can see, the impact is huge."
