Confirm your fish choice with a text message
Even though I know there are lots of fish we shouldn't eat, I have enough to worry about without trying to commit the "acceptable fish list" to memory. Rather than accidentally contribute to the permanent extinction of a species, lately I've just been skipping the seafood choices when I can't tell if it's a sustainably fished species. Same thing with high mercury levels, or other toxic contaminants - if I'm not sure, I just order the chicken.
This weekend, in the always delightful Parade Magazine, I read about a great service provided by the non-profit Blue Ocean Institute that is going to put the fish back on my plate with the help of my iPhone.
Actually it works with any cell phone. Just text the message FISH, and the name of the fish you want to eat, to 30644. The Blue Ocean Institute will text you back, and if it's a red flag fish, they'll suggest alternatives.
Next time I go out it's going to be fish for dinner!
