Jennifer Connelly dropped vegan diet during pregnancy
What's the deal with celebrities jumping off the vegetarian band wagon these days? First it was Travis Barker -- you know, the dude from Blink 182 -- going back to meat after a brush with death. Now, Jennifer Connelly has revealed that she reverted back to her meat-eating ways because, during her pregnancy, she found herself unable to resist the temptation of the bird that many Americans will celebrate in exactly two weeks. In her own words:"I'd been vegan for many years, and then all of a sudden, when I was pregnant with Kai, I wanted a turkey burger. That was the end of my being vegan."
Actually Jennifer, that was the end of you being a vegetarian. Right? When you start eating meat again, you're no longer a vegetarian. I think that's how it works.
But hey, I'm certainly no pusher of soy burgers -- in fact, I'm a pretty unapologetic omnivore -- but I know a cop-out when I hear one. Is there really a need to justify eating meat by making it part of a broader life change: like a pregnancy or near-death experience?
Sorry PETA, but no matter how many 'meat is murder' advertisements you put out, it's not going to change a significant number of diets. If you want to go omnivorous, yet you still want to keep your eco-footprint in check there are some low-carbon options out there.

I agree with you. I think the enviroment is the only legitimate reason to push vegetarianism. I mean if we can't bring down Big Tobacco on account of health issues or ban gay marriage because of ethics how can you put an end to the meat industry that way? ( my stepfather's sister quit being vegan for the exact same reason Jennifer Connely did)

Wow, Josh, way to be a Jerk. Travis Barker did not use his brush with death as a cop-out to begin eating meat again. He began eating meat because his doctors told him that he needed to eat animal protein to recover from his extensive burns. As a vegetarian myself, I think it is pretty disgusting that anyone - especially a meat eater such as yourself - would show contempt for a vegetarian who begins eating meat again in order to speed their recovery from life-threatening and excruciatingly painful injury.
I'm not sure why you feel you have the right to judge.

Uh, no. She was vegan. She didn't eat animal products, now she does. Therefore, she is no longer a VEGAN. If you were a vegetarian, then you're no longer a vegetarian; if you were a vegan, then you're no longer a vegan. Maybe you shouldn't correct people when they had it right and you don't even know the definition of the words they're saying.
Also, what cop-out? She wasn't making an excuse. She just said that she didn't eat animal products, now she does. She didn't say that her pregnancy was the cause; she just said that during that particular period of time, she suddenly wanted meat. So now she eats it. At what point was she "copping-out?"
As a vegan (remember what that is?), I know what my beliefs are, but I respect other people's as well. If you want to eat meat, fine. I feel there are more reasons not to eat animals than there are to eat animals, but it's entirely your choice and I'm cool with that. Whether Connelly and Barker are now eating meat due to health reasons or just pure desire, it's their perrogative. What right do you have to judge these people?

Just for the record everyone. You don't need animal protein to heal from surgeries, burns, etc. You just need protein which you can get from a variety of plant based sources including nuts, seeds, legumes, grains, and vegetables, etc.
As far as the cop out thing goes I have no respect for anyone who uses lame ass excuses for going back to eating meat. If you want to eat meat just own up to it and do it. Don't act like there was some health reason or concern behind it because that's BS. Jennifer Connelly did a semi-cop out. She blamed the pregnancy on her cravings for meat when she should have just said she wanted to eat it so she did.
Oh, and for anyone who has more questions of plant based protein feel free to look into organizations like the PCRM who have tons of resources of the American Dietetic Associations page (www.eatright.org) as a RD, anthropologist and vegan I know from many many years of studying that a vegan diet is safe and healthy at every stage of life including during pregnancy, lactation, for children and after surgery.

Pregnancy can be a peculiar thing. I'm just the opposite of Connelly...I was a meat-eater but then I became pregnant and now I can't stand meat at all period! I'm working closely with my doctor and a dietician to make sure that I get everything I need during this meatless pregnancy. I must admit that I do feel alot better now then I ever did as a carnivore. I have more energy, my mind is clearer and I have an overall sense of well-being. I think I may just stick with this lifestyle for the long haul.
