Prop 2 passes, chickens rejoice
California had an interesting day at the ballots last week. They elected Barack Obama, that was a given, but it is the propositions that are generating the local (and national) talk.
Altering the constitution to outlaw same-sex marriages, Prop 8 is getting all of the headlines, and like a nasty kidney stone it is not passing quietly. It burns.
Prop 2, however, passed quickly and quietly. It was the issue regarding the treatment of animals raised for market and food production.
Apparently Californians care more about chickens than their neighbors. The chickens aren't complaining.
Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society, must be ecstatic about the Prop 2 results.
Thanks to the passage of the proposition, all pigs, hens, and calves will be provided enough area to "stand up, lie down, turn around, and freely extend their limbs" by the year 2015.
This is a big change compared to images captured by undercover Humane Society video that showed cows that were too weak to stand being pushed by machines and dragged by chains.
Of course there are those that believe the proposition is part of a liberal agenda to turn America vegan, which is about as intelligent as claiming a vote for Obama will turn America Muslim (or a vote against Prop 8 will turn America gay).
Pacelle has no such plan. He just wants society to be humane. What a concept.
