Neil Young's Linc Volt will compete for the 100mpg X Prize
As many of you probably know, Neil Young shares in the American dream of driving big long fast cars with tail fins -- but he's also dedicated to environmental stewardship. That's why, instead of parting with his favorite '59 Lincoln Continental, he's taken it upon himself to give the car new life as an eco-friendly, electric-powered, classic vehicle named the Linc Volt. Now, Neil's announced that he plans for his 2 tons of Detroit steel to compete for the $10M X Prize. What do celebrities drive?
Sponsored by Progressive Insurance, the automotive X Prize will be awarded to the first "production capable" vehicle that can go 100mpg while meeting at least Tier II Bin 5 emissions standards. Starting with a super-heavy Lincoln from the 50s, Neil is definitely fighting an uphill battle. If Neil's and company are able to pull it off with a '59 Continental, there should be no doubt that it can be done with smaller, lighter, more aerodynamic cars.
No word on what Young would do with the money, should he win.
