Starbucks to switch to recycled coffee cups

Starbucks LogoStarbucks announced at their annual leadership conference that by 2015, 100% of their cups will be reusable or recyclable. They are aiming for 25% of their cups to be reusable and to add recycling stations in their stores (which is a BIG improvement).

These goals are part of Starbucks' "Shared Planet" initiative which also includes buying coffee from ethical sources and putting money back into the hands of farmers. The company is also working with farmers to reduce deforestation in Sumatra, Indonesia and Mexico. One more goal is that by 2010, all Starbucks owned properties will be getting 50% of their energy from renewable resources.

But to get back to the cups ... I just want to point out that "reusable" is a pretty wide open term. For example, back in my barista days, we had one gentleman who "reused" the same paper cup for days on end just to take advantage of Starbucks refill discounts. I hope that Starbucks isn't counting on me digging cups out from under my car seat for my next fix.
