I'm sure they are all hobby farms, and whats the harm in that? So what, now its frowned upon for a person to farm unless it is their only source of income? Maybe they find it relaxing, and a way to stay or become more grounded and get away from the Hollywood crap. Who can blame them. Why must things like this always be given a negative spin?

The harm being that when things become fashionable and chic they become expensive and/or polluted. Although I am all for celebrities adopting existing small farms--that is the way to go! They get their hobby farm without all the necessary upkeep.

I don't have to dream about operating a farm I already do that on about 150 acres in Maryland. Farming isn't just about having cute animals around and showing people that food grows. More and more the environmental issues of fertilizing (both commercially and more importantly organically) are being addressed and mandates put on our farmers. I just wish people would not take the many hardships that farmers have for granted.

p.s. most farmers are "hobby farmers" because on farm income is not able to sustain a family

The fact is that little attention went into driving Prius sales from Toyota, until Leonardo Di Caprio and others from Film Fame land started to choose to drive them around. If we are to turn around the food system challenges before us we need 1,000,000 plus, new farmers in our food systems. Hobby farms and 'Second Home' farms that get supported with outside income and drive for better practices is just what we need to attract a new generation into small, well designed, integrated farms. Today the average age of a working farmer is late 50's. We need innovative, energized market driven and vision driven young farmers, and if Hollywood talent can help finance young farmers to work with them to make land more productive in a rational, organic system of well designed farms, it just might be a part of what saves us all. Suddenly, it's cool to farm. Very cool.
