Is the environment on the ballot in your state?
One way to get what you want from your government is to vote your sir or ma'm into office. Another way is to vote into law the policies you agree with. Many states in the U.S. have ballot initiatives that address the environment. Here are a few of them.In California
- A renewable energy generation initiative would require utilities to generate 20 percent of their power from renewable energy sources by 2010. That requirement becomes 50% by 2025.
- Another ballot measure would provide $3.425 billion to help consumers buy alternative fuel vehicles and $1.25 billion in research for renewable energy.
- A ballot measure would provide property tax exemption for perpetually conserved land.
- A special assessment and tax is on the ballot to protect the state's forests.
- Voters will be asked if they support the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment which would dedicate roughly $276 million a year for 25 years to fund the environment and the arts
- After a legal tussle a citizen led initiative is on the ballot that would require utility companies too use more renewable energy.
- Voters will be asked whether the state should bond $400 million for environmental conservation, preservation and revitalization
