Beluga whales - definitely clever, possibly caring
As a follow up to Sea's post that the Beluga whale is now an endangered species (no thanks to Sarah "Oil Companies Are Waaaaaay More Important Than Animals" Palin), I want to share this video of three Belugas who live in a Japanese aquarium.
Beluga whales are oddly cute, with their vulnerable looking big white foreheads and waxy looking skin. The whales at this aquarium also show how clever they are, doing all kinds of tricks for a delighted audience, including a very excited little girl.
Watching Allya the whale blow a bubble right at the little girl (it will make sense when you watch the video, it's near the end), you have to consider the possibility of these mammals having thoughts, feelings and understanding. It really looks like Allya is enjoying doing this trick, and waiting for the reaction from her audience!
Even if you don't think whales think, it's sad that human activity has thinned their ranks to the point of near extinction. You can learn more about these fascinating creatures at the Defense of Wildlife site, and even adopt one!
