Phil Collins condemns foie gras
Phil Collins is campaigning against a U.K. department store giant, Selfridges, because they sell the French delicacy foie gras. If you're not French, or a foodie let me help you out a little bit. Foie gras is the engorged liver of duck or goose, brought to this state because of force-feeding the birds.Phil is trying to use PETA and what's left of his fame to get Selfridges to stop stocking the product. He recently sent the company a gruesome letter of protest.
In his letter, he describes the cruel and unusual torture these birds go through, "To force-feed the birds, pipes are rammed down their throats a few times per day. Many times, the pipes puncture the birds' throats, and the animals bleed to death. This cruel procedure causes the birds' livers to become diseased and swell up to 10 times their normal size. Birds that don't die became sick and lethargic, and indeed, death rates skyrocket during the force-feeding time."
That makes me sick just reading about it. And many other U.K. stores have already banned foie gras, so hopefully Phil will be successful in his mission. Who knows, maybe next time he can take on the country of France, the biggest consumer of the food.
