Energy Seed - Don't toss those batteries, plant them

We know that throwing our used-up AAs in the landfill is bad for the environment, but finding a place to recycle them is not as easy as tossing them in a bin and setting them by the curb. That's one of the major reasons that tons of these toxic batteries and their heavy metal contents end up in the garbage every year. For percisely this reason, eco-conscious designers Sung Woo Park and Sunhee Kim have set out to make recycling your old alkaline batteries easy and even kinda fun.

The Energy Seed lamp doubles as streetlight and battery recycling container, using the leftover energy in the batteries to power a LED halo as they wait to be collected by recyclers. At present, you can take your single-use batteries to places like Walgreen's or Battery Solutions, Inc to be recycled -- but how much cooler would it be to use them to light up the sidewalk? Just drop your old batteries in the Energy Seed's cylindrical slots and you're done. According to Sung Woo's website, it only takes about 2 spent batteries to power an LED bulb.
