Simply Wood Rings
Gustav Reyes, a Chicago-based artist, crafts Simply Wood Rings, wooden wedding rings made from salvaged lumber. Some of the lumber is simply found, some of it is sourced from other craftspeople. Each of the rings have a story based in the origin of the wood; some of the wood might come from "a violin that had its beginnings filling orchestra halls with sounds that soothed the human soul," or the wood from the "baseball bat of a mothers' young son." The wood then lives on as a wedding ring, an anniversary ring, or simply a "celebration of nature" ring where you can "let the tree hug you."
According to Reyes, the rings are more durable than one would think. The rings are made, by hand, from a single piece of wood and can withstand the occasional shower or hand wash, but not an extended submersion in water.
Reye's earliest memories of making things by hand were making tissue paper art in Kindergarten and making cardboard box robots with his brother. Sweet.
