The R.E.X. Project now complete
In December of 2007, HGTV star, Shannon Quimby begun the transformation of an uninhabitable Portland, OR cottage into a family home. Instead of simply razing the structure and starting new, Shannon was committed to recycling the entire cottage. There was not a single dumpster on site.
As construction continued, many bits and pieces were sent out to storage and brought back at a later date. The old tub was turned into an outdoor dog wash, rotten, unpainted wood was transformed into mulch, and scrap metal was turned into roofing.
When it was all said and done there were only two and a half pick-up beds full of waste. Half was the plaster from the walls that could not be recycled due to lead content. The other have consisted primarily of take-out food containers from the workers. To read on on the experiment, read the archives here and here.
