EcoDriving USA, brought to you by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, actually has some good driving tips to offer, in an effort to help reduce the impact of your driving.
- Avoid rapid starts and stops.
- Keep rolling in traffic: Go "slow and go" instead of stop and go.
- Drive steady to hopefully hit the green lights: This one I am not sure on. According to EcoDriving, engineers optimize traffic light timing, so a steady speed can help drivers avoid red lights. It seems to me I either hit all of the red lights on a given trip, or none, always going at a steady speed.
- Should you use your A/C or not? According to EcoDriving, when driving at slower speeds, less than 40 mph, open windows are better. When driving at higher speeds, over 40 mph, open windows use more fuel than the air conditioner, due to aerodynamic drag, so use the A/C.
- Avoid idling: Shut off your engine for any stop that is going to be more than 30 seconds long.
Most of the tips sound like common sense or inspired by the
hypermiling school of driving, although not as extreme. See EcoDriving.com for more tips and suggestions.
