Former vegetarian Travis Barker eats meat again after plane crash
PETA is going to be all over this in a heartbeat! In fact, I'm surprised they haven't jumped on the story already. Maybe they're just trying to be respectful since Travis Barker nearly died recently, but somehow I doubt it. Most likely they just haven't thought of a high profile enough way to attack yet.Travis used to be a die-hard vegetarian, but ever since he survived a horrific plane crash he's had to start eating meat again. After 25 years of his vegetarian lifestyle, he actually didn't find the change in diet too difficult.
The decision to start consuming animals again started because of doctor's orders. Travis was told that his third degree burns would start to heal more quickly if he had the protein in his diet.
He's quoted as saying that he doesn't mind, as long not being a vegetarian helps him along the road to recovery, "I need protein from food rather than just protein supplements. I changed my diet. I would do anything I possibly could if they said like, 'There's a possibility you might heal faster if you do eat meat or just change your eating habits'. So I did. I don't regret it at all, I feel so much better."

I am quite surprised PETA didn't jump all over this. What ever you have to say about the animal rights movement, you have to admit that PETA's been known to lack tact. I suppose they assume he go back to vegetarianism after his burns heal.

PETA very well may be respecting the fact that he needs to do this. Although PETA has indeed sensationalized things in the past, they are still promoting compassion and have changed many people's concepts of what we need to survive and how we need to treat animals.
I'm not sure if I could eat meat even if advised to for these reasons, as most (with the exception of Dr. Neil Barnard and some others) of the medical establishment still are under the assumption that vegetarians in general are not healthier because of their supposed "lack" of protein, even though the New England Journal of Medicine found long, long ago that vegetarians live longer and healthier. However, haven't walked a mile in Travis' shoes and one needs to make their own choices.
