"Deadly Dozen" report warns of spreading diseases due to climate change

gas maskIf you thought drowning polar bears and rising sea levels were the worst part of global climate change, a new Wildlife Conservation Society report released this week focuses on another freak-you-out issue -- an increase in deadly diseases.

As temperatures and precipitation levels go all wonky, the routes of nasty pathogens, a deadly dozen of them cited in the report, could start to shift and increase. The dozen cited diseases are examples of what could quickly diffuse as global warming becomes even more of an issue. The diseases cited include avian flu, Ebola and plague (that's right, as in the plague).

Before you look to decorating the panic room, the society has said that close monitoring of wildlife health will be one of the most useful ways to see how these diseases are spreading and moving globally. Once we understand the pathways of these diseases and how they are responding to climate change, we can plan accordingly.
