Five places to donate your old cell phone
I have at least three old cell phones floating around my house somewhere. I'm sure you do as well. If you have teenagers you probably have several more. What to do with the old phone when you buy a new one? Here are five ideas:- Cell Phones for Soldiers bags arrive with every package I order from Amazon. They refurbish the phones and give them to soldiers around the world for calling home.
- Charitable Recycling Program recycles used phones and sends the profits to the charitable organization of your choice.
- American Cell Phone Drive lets you search by zip code for a local charitable organization collecting cell phones for recycling.
- Recycling for Charities recycles pones and gives proceeds to the charity of your choice. They also recycle old iPods/MP3 players, digital cameras and PDAs.
- Have a popular phone that you aren't using but aren't quite ready to donate? Try CellForCash to get a little cash for your phone. If your phone isn't on their list, it will still be donated to a worthy cause.
It is better than throwing your phone in the trash, that's for sure, but I think if I was going to choose a recycling program I'd pick something like the Cell Phones for Soldiers that actually collects, refurbishes and redistributes the used phone to someone that needs it. All of them are good options though and if you can collect a bunch of phones for a specific charity, it could make a big difference.

I work for Best Buy, and there is also a recycle bin at the entrance of every store (in the vestibule) for cell phones, ink cartridges, and batteries. I don't know exactly what is done with these electronics, i believe they are sent back to their manufacturers. So it may not be as noble as donating your old cell phone to our armed forces, but sometimes you have a broken phone anyway.

Consider contacting your local domestic violence program (or call the National Helpline for a referral to your local program- 1-800-799-SAFE). Most DV programs have some sort of cell phone recycling program and either use the old phones as 911 emergency phones to give to clients in danger or recycle them to help fund their program.

Send your old cell phone to Goodwill. We make sure it does not go to the landfill. Plus, your donation will help a person with disabilities gain employment! Tell your friends.
