Polar bears are starting to eat each other

The Arctic ice is shrinking; this past summer it dwindled to its second lowest level ever. According to Walt Meier, a scientist with the National Snow and Ice Data Center, we are heading towards "an ice cover that is going to melt completely in the summertime in the Arctic." According to an article on CNN, the less ice there is, the more ocean water there is to absorb the sun's heat, instead of reflect it.

The best known consequence of the shrinking ice is the loss of polar bear habitat. A less-known consequence of the shrinking ice is a rise in polar bear cannibalism. According to Kassie Siegal, from the Center for Biological Diversity, as global warming changes the Arctic, "Polar bears are starving, drowning and even resorting to cannibalism because they don't have access to their usual food sources."

Meier says that the Arctic is "the canary in the coal mine" of climate change. A cliche that is a bit overused perhaps, but meaningful nevertheless. Maybe polar bears eating each other is a sign that the Arctic is in trouble.
