University of Oklahoma to go 100% wind power by 2013
While it may not be the world's first campus to run on 100% renewable energy -- that title is expected to go to Oregon Tech and their geothermal plant -- true to their name, Oklahoma will have a completely wind-powered campus sooner than any other school. This week, the university's board of regents has approved plans to purchase all of its power from wind farms starting in 2013. According to OU's president: "It is our patriotic duty as Americans to help our country achieve energy independence and to be sound stewards of the environment,"The energy for OU's big switch will come from the "OU Spirit Wind Farm," set to go live sometime in 2010 in western Oklahoma. Currently, the University of Oklahoma's main campus in Norman buys 10% of its electricity from wind farms. Over the next few years, the school will continue to expand its "green campus initiative" to reduce its footprint by increasing their use of natural gas vehicles. Sounds like they may have been talking to T. Boone Pickens.
