San Antonio sets green example with poop-fueled power
Although the Lone Start State's historical love affair coal power has given it the not-so-endearing title of "largest US carbon polluter," that doesn't mean it's not on the path to redemption. Along with leading the nation in wind power capacity, city officials in San Antonio announced their plans Tuesday to lead the way with another source of "clean" energy: a human waste to natural gas conversion plant.According to the article, San Antonio will be the first city to harvest methane gas, on a commercial scale, from human "biosolids" -- of which the city produces about 140,000 tons per year. Other cities do, however, use harvested methane to power smaller facilities like sewage plants or even zoos. With the addition of this new plan, an estimated 90% of material that goes through San Antonios sewage system will recycled. As of now, solids already get composted and liquids reused for irrigation. Maybe that will help offset Tommy Lee Jone's water consumption.
