Even global warming can't increase the glacial pace of Tesla Roadster production
When I got my Prius, the waiting list was almost four months long. It was so frustrating that I finally took a more deluxe model with GPS just to get the darn thing home. Even with that experience, I can only imagine the agony and anticipation of waiting for the super cute, super energy efficient electric Tesla Roadster. So far 1,200 orders for sexy convertible have been placed. And so far, only 27 of those orders have been filled! So at this rate, you need to order one about four years ahead of time. Did I mention these cars cost $100,000? I guess that doesn't include any kind of rush charge.
The company issued a press release this week to announce that they're going to ramp up production. Right now they're only producing three or four cars each week. Their lofty goal? To get it to 40 a week by early next year. That ought to cut the wait down to...three years.
Now, there is something to be said for fine craftsmanship and good things coming to those who wait, but Tesla needs to get the lead out and get more of those cars on the road. Competitor Toyota already put the company on a "secret" death watch.
Plus, damn it, our green stars need something sexier to drive now! Clooney better be getting his next. He's killing me with that Tango.
