Dutch turn to chicken poo for biomass energy source
For generations, the term 'chicken sh*t' has been used to disparage and belittle those who seem to lack courage or resolve. Now, in the brave new world of alternative energy, the Dutch ministry is working to change our perception of the much misunderstood fecal matter. According to them, there's all sorts of power in chicken poop -- and they're going to prove it by using poultry waste to power 90,000 homes. Teaming up with the agricultural ministry, a Dutch utility firm named Delta has built and is currently operating a biomass plant that will convert a third of the Netherlands' annual 1.2 million tons of poultry waste into carbon-neutral electricity. Nice. The plant will will take in approximately 440,000 tons of waste per year and run at a capacity of 36.5MW, which isn't too bad for a biomass plant. It's actually kind of impressive if you consider what it burns for fuel. Plus, the ash produced by the burning chicken poo will be sold as phosphorus and kalium-rich fertilizer.
