End of the world scheduled for tomorrow - maybe

With all the hype over rising sea levels and earth being slowly scorched by the sun like ants under a magnifying glass -- it's easy to lose sight of an existential fear that has gripped the heart of mankind for generations: science.

Tomorrow, in a tunnel located 100 meters underground in Switzerland, scientists will flip the switch on the much anticipated Large Hadron Collider -- possibly resulting in complications like a small black hole that would turn the planet (along with all of its endangered animals) into a chunk of "strange matter."

Apparently, this black hole would not be the harmless, novelty-sized porthole through which we could possibly throw trash into another dimension. Instead, some believe that this is the world-ending calamity that Nostradamus predicted would originate near Geneva in the form of a "positive ray." Could these positive rays be the positively-charged proton beams that European scientists will start firing at the Large Hadron Collider tomorrow?

Charges have been filed in Honolulu courts (where else?) against the European Organization for Nuclear Research, know as CERN, alleging that scientists have downplayed the risks of creating a tiny black hole. Though it doesn't seem likely to stop CERN from launching the particle accelerator.

Personally, I've always been against theories that call for the apocalypse in my lifetime. That's why I've always been deeply suspicious of the Mayan calendar -- better to leave the fate of the world in the better-prepared hands of future generations.
