Shoo fly: Rid your house of flies naturally
Aaah the housefly. They seem to be more prevalent this time of year for me. It could be because we keep the doors open a little too long when playing in the yard. Or perhaps it's that we are more prone to going away for a couple of days at a time, leaving the flies to infest as they please. Having the cat box right next to the door does not help. Whatever the reason, I consulted the internet for ways to repel these nasty creatures.
The best ways to keep flies from infesting your home are to never let them in to begin with. Secure doors and windows and buy some screens if you have to. Make sure that all garbage lids are tight fitting to keep the food supply low.
For the single wayward fly, the fist line of defense is the ol' fly swatter. Splat! Works like a charm. A rolled up newspaper comes in second.
Usually I'm able to shoo the flies out of a window as that seems to be where they are wont to go anyway. There are times though that I feel like I am under attack. When combating several flies they these tips:

- Make your own fly paper by cutting strips from a paper bag and coating them with a two to one ratio of sugar and corn syrup. Suspend the strip over a bowl to collect drips.
- Use various scents to keep them away. Flies dislike pine oil, mint, basil and cloves.

Also, you can set out a glass of sweet red wine, and all the little fruit flies will come for a sip. That's all it takes, they get tipsy and fall in. The next day, all of the flies will be floating on top of the wine! What a way to go!
