Keep butter fresh without your refrigerator
I'm always asking my mom to tell me stories of growing up on a family farm. One of things that fascinates me is that they did not have a refrigerator. She says that they really didn't need one. They had fresh milk every day from their own cows, fresh eggs from their chickens, fresh fish from the sea right outside their window, and some dry and preserved items to round things out. And of course, butter and cheese, well, those would last a while even without any refrigeration. The Glass Butter Crock from Gaiam can keep butter fresh at room temperature for weeks, so it's always ready to use, unlike block-hard butter straight out of the refrigerator. According to Gaiam, just fill the serving dish with a stick of butter, and fill the base with water. Invert the dish of butter into the base and the water will seal out oxygen that causes rancidity.
Available from Gaiam for a reasonable $14.
Has anyone ever used one of these? How did it work for you?
