Boat made of plastic bottles completes historic journey
When two eco-minded marine scientists, Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal, first came up with the idea to navigate the Pacific on a raft made of trash, the didn't quite know what they were getting into. As the duo set sail from Long Beach on June 1st to raise awareness on the growing island of plastic in the Pacific, they looked forward to a month and a half on the high seas. Eighty-eight days later, they finally reached their destination of Honolulu. Thanks to an extremely slow start, the voyage of 'The Junk' and its passengers was about twice as long as anticipated. This week, the boat constructed of 15,000 plastic bottles and discarded sailing masts finally completed its historic voyage -- and Eriksen and Paschal are not wasting any time in drawing media attention towards the huge trash island in the Pacific. According to Eriksen:
"The mass of plastic in the middle of the Pacific, in the middle of no where, it's increasing very quickly. When we began ten years ago and we found like .002 grams (of plastic) for each square meter. It doubled in five years. It doubled again three years later."
