Rejected: Latest Pickens commercial too hot for NBC
As network ratings continue to spiral downward, you've got to wonder: can they really afford to be picky when billionaires offer them money to run a 15-second, seemingly non-controversial spot urging Americans to switch to natural gas? Apparently so. The latest installment of those Pickens Plan commercials -- that run during seemingly every single commercial break on the 24hr news networks -- has been rejected by NBC for being unproven. Since when did commercials have to appeal to logic and reason?
The new commercial simply states that Iran is switching their cars to LNG so they can sell more oil at $120 a barrel, and we're not doing anything in the US. What NBC takes issue with -- and perhaps rightfully so -- is the fact that the commercial doesn't 'prove' that the US is a do-nothing nation when it comes to energy policy.
Hmm, I wouldn't say that we're a do-nothing nation, but there's definitely some room for debate. In fact, we know already that Pickens himself is backing a new LNG car company of his own. Plus there's the Chevy Volt, Toyota EV, etc.
Still, when did NBC start requiring that commercials meet debate team standards? Between the beer commercials, erectile dysfunction ads, and political attack propaganda -- it doesn't seem like they do that much fact checking to me.
