Funeral homes face problem of people who won't pick up their relatives' ashes
Some funeral directors are in a real bind these days. After cremation, many people aren't coming to pick up their loved one's ashes, and by law, funeral homes are bound to hold them for various amounts of time, from sixty days up to as long as four years. Even after the set holding time has passed, many funeral homes are reluctant to dispose of the forgotten ashes, hoping to give them to a relative one day.
Some consider cremation a greener choice, as it does not involve embalming chemicals. As for what to do with the remains post-cremation, there are eco-friendly and biodegradable urns out there, such as shown in the gallery below from Richard Lamb.
While these forgotten ashes are probably not being abandoned due to not being able to find a earth-friendly urn, but rather avoidance or a misunderstanding of the cremation process, it's still nice to know there are earth-friendly, yet beautiful, options out there for remains.
