This year the coolest year in five years, so far

The first half of this year 2008 has been the coolest year of the past five years, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The entire year is forecast to be cooler than recent years, although temperatures will still remain above the historical average.

The cooler weather is attributed to La Nina, which follows the warming pattern, El Nino. However, some scientists say La Nina is weakening, meaning that the global mean temperature could rise over the last part of this year and raise the overall temperature for the year in the end.

Climate scientists caution that such periodic coolings do not mean that greenhouse gas emissions are not causing global warming. The past decade was the hottest since record keeping started around 1850, according to the WMO.
