Carbon offsetting for flying "too crude"

Feeling ok about that air travel because you bought some carbon offsets? Think again.

One problem with offsets for flying is that there are huge variations in the "carbon calculators" used to determine how many offsets you need. There are many variables that can be set to produce wildly different results, according to a recent Reuters article. Critics say that carbon offsetting for flying creates an illusion of minimizing the impact of flying, while avoiding tackling the real problem.

Adding to the confusion, according to the article: Many folks don't even know what "offsetting" is. A recent survey found that one in ten Britons thinks offsetting means walking to work instead of driving. One percent of men thought it meant putting out a barbecue properly (?)

But there is hope. According to the Clean-Air-Cool Planet report, here are the top performing retail carbon offsetters in the US, should you decide to offset some of that travel eco-guilt:
