There are many variables that can be set to produce wildly different results, according to a recent Reuters article. Critics say that carbon offsetting for flying creates an illusion of minimizing the impact of flying, while avoiding tackling the real problem.
Adding to the confusion, according to the article: Many folks don't even know what "offsetting" is. A recent survey found that one in ten Britons thinks offsetting means walking to work instead of driving. One percent of men thought it meant putting out a barbecue properly (?)
