Wind turbines on the Empire State Building?
While New York City is know for consuming lots of resources, it's not so well-known for producing them -- but that's something that Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to change. He wants to lead the city on a quest to put solar panels, windmills, and hydro electric turbines anywhere that they can be useful -- and he means anywhere. Skyscrapers, famous bridges, the East River, Mayor Bloomberg wants to switch the Big Apple's public image from a red delicious to a green granny smith. Although he's proposing drastic changes to the city's skyline, the greenification plan is not intended to be superficial. Bloomberg's plan is to keep the city's energy consumption at today's levels by increasing energy conservation, then supplementing power through renewable production. The mayor predicts that New York will "make money by being green" -- and that, he says, will show private industry that "you can have it both ways."
As for the Statue of Liberty, Bloomberg says that her torch should definitely be lit with renewable energy -- most likely from off-shore wind farms. That way, she'll symbolize not only individual freedom, but freedom from foreign oil.
