Save on commuting, save the planet too!

traffic jamThe folks over at Inc.com have put together a nice slideshow on ways to cut your commuting costs. They didn't happen to mention that all of the possibilities are also better for the environment.

1. The number one option is to do some carpooling. Not surprisingly with gas prices reaching $4 per gallon, there has been a resurgence in interest in carpooling.

2. Next, the very European idea of bike sharing. Basically, the city owns the bikes and with a special swipe card or key you can share a bike for personal use. Maybe to commute to the office or to run some errands, it's up to you. Several U.S. cities are looking at the idea.

3. Third on the list is a shorter workweek. I personally know several people whose companies are considering this as an option to save workers money on commuting costs. Perhaps it's the area of the country I'm in - average commute times of 45 minutes in the Dallas metroplex are quite common. Four ten hour workdays save workers money on the commute but can also save the company money in energy costs by using the office one less day per week.

4. The fourth item on the list is something that has been around for awhile, but people have not cared to participate I think. That is, public transportation discounts. Many companies in cities with a good public transit system offer discounted ride packages for employees. Perfect if you live somewhere with a good transportation system.

5. Next is everyone's dream job lately - telecommuting. Obviously, working from home doesn't just save on your commuting cost, it eliminates it. It also opens up possibilities of being a one car family, and saving even more money.

6. The last option saves you money, saves the planet and spends your calories - walking! If you live close enough to where you work, walking is a great option.

What have you done to green your commute?
