California rejects bisphenol-A ban
California lawmakers rejected a ban on bisphenol-A this past Monday. The state Assembly voted 31-27 to turn down the bill requiring that food and drink containers intended for children age 3 and younger contain no more than trace amounts of bisphenol-A. This comes on the heels of the FDA maintaining that bisphenol-A does not pose health hazards in the amounts that leach from plastic food and drink containers, including baby bottles.According to an article in the Mercury News, animal studies have shown that bisphenol-A can be hormone-mimicking, but there is varying evidence on its effects in humans.
Canada intends to ban bisphenol-A in food and drink bottles and Wal-Mart aims to take all baby bottles with bisphenol-A off their shelves over the next year, along with the retailer Toys R Us.
So, regardless of what lawmakers and government scientists have concluded in our country, this might be a case of the market speaking out. With a wide variety of baby bottles out there now that do not contain bisphenol-A, including the old standby, glass, parents have lots of choices and are empowered to research this issue and make their own decision.
