San Francisco: Smart car owners cram Lombard Street
Though the Smart Fortwo hasn't exactly become an instant classic in the US auto industry, owners of the fuel efficient micro-rides are definitely trying to push the Fortwo into cult status -- including rapper Redman. At a recent display of Smart mania, enthusiasts crammed 133 of the European two-seaters onto San Francisco's winding and picturesque Lombard St. to show their love for the 40mpg cruisers.I've heard of cramming cars full of bodies to get into the Guinness Book, but I've never thought about the idea of cramming iconic roadways with cars to make a statement. Guess, it's kind of like the idea behind the Critical Mass bike rides that have been working their way across the country. Only, it's hard to tell if the recent Smart car rally was really meant to make a statement about oil consumption, or just a straight up Fortwo lovefest.

Go Alternative Transportation! Anything that makes a difference in congestion and pollution is worth it. SmartCars are very useful.
We're working on a very small electric vehicle that's considered an electric bicycle - it will be interesting to see how we do on Lombard Street during our 700 mile ride on public roads, bike paths, and trails, to see what the reaction really is.

Wow Stacie,
Saw your ride. Looks like you could fit a couple thousand on Lombard street. I will look for you in Santa Cruz when you come zuming in.
