H2Offenders: Lance is champion of wasting water
Everybody loves Lance Armstrong. He's known know for kicking butt in the mountain stages of the Tour de France, promoting bicycle commuting to work, and his battle against testicular cancer that resulted in the ubiquitous LIVESTRONG campaign. Unfortunately, he's also getting a reputation for something that's not so heroic -- sucking 330,000 gallons of water out of the parched Edwards aquifer to water his lawn in July. While it doesn't quite compare to Celine Dion's 18,000 gallons a day, Lance's home happens to be located in the semi-arid and highly water-sensitive area of Central Texas. Currently, Austin is in an alarm-stage drought due to below average rains this spring. So, when the news broke that Lance was using 38 times more water that the average Austinite to water his Spanish-colonial style villa -- it didn't look too good.
In response, Lance said that he was "shocked," and that "there's no justification for that much water... I need to fix this." It's good to see that Lance is committed to curbing his consumption. Maybe he can head up a water conservation effort directed at other celebrity H2Offenders.
