Germans try to halt glacial melt with giant sun shade
As global temperatures keep inching their way upward, many are starting to put earth's frozen water on the endangered species list. We're constantly hearing about huge chunks of ice shelves falling into the ocean, ski mountains not having enough snow, etc. But have we really come to the point where we're willing to put giant sun shades over existing glaciers to slow the melting? German scientists don't seem to think it's bad idea at all.Researches at Johannes Gutenberg University are currently at work on a giant solar screen that they will place over the Rhone glacier (in the Swiss Alps) with the hope of slowing -- if not stopping -- the glacier's deterioration. Construction on the approximately 490 sqft screen is set to begin on August 21st. In the laboratory, experiments have shown that the screen can create a net cooling effect, allowing cold winds to pass over the glacier while blocking the sun's rays.
