Indian official: Rat sandwiches can solve food shortage
Between an ever-expanding world population, intense droughts, and the emergence of crop-based biofuels in the world commodities market, many nations are finding that food is just not cheap and abundant as is has been in years past. That's why India's welfare secretary is recommending that people in the state of Bihar add rat meat to their everyday diet. He wants rodent on the menu in homes, vendors stalls, and even in 5-star hotels. While it may seem like the most ridiculous way to supplement northeastern India's food supply, many of the state's impoverished eat rat meat regularly -- as they have for many years. In support of the pro-rat meat argument -- eating rodent would constitute a double whammy in terms of food supply. Rodents eat a reported 50% of Bihar's grain stocks each year -- that's almost unbelievable.
Now, I might consider dining on some kind of alternative meat like kangaroo to shrink my carbon footprint, but faced with the problem in Bihar -- I'd opt for rodent-proof grain silos. What do you say, locavores?
