Sweden tests out its high-speed "Green Train"

While trains offer tons of benefits in terms of the environment, convenience, and cost, one of the coolest things about trains is the fact that they can really haul some booty. High-speed trains can offer something that the automobile industry can't compete with: speeds of 200+mph. That's why its exciting to see the Swedish making progress on their energy-saving speed machine called the Gröna Taget, or Green Train, in English.

Designed by the appropriately named engineering firm, Bombadier, the Green Train is part of a new push to prove that high-speed train systems can be sustainable. So, in addition to being clocked at speeds as high as 183mph in test runs, the Green Train project is also hoping to cut energy consumption by 20-30%. An even faster bullet train is being planned for California, only it won't be running until 2030, if it actually comes to pass. The Green Train project expects to be finished with testing by 2010, putting it at the forefront of the latest generation of green speedsters.
