What kind of school do people go to where the teacher and the parents haven't already exchanged contact information? Why would it need to be included in a letter? Also, don't be confused and think these lists, though I'm sure it does apply in some cases, come from a specific teacher as it is the entire school (well, a committee) that crafts them. Of course, people trying to be green in a big city (funny concept) probably have a lot of different issues to deal with when it comes to schools. For instance I hear the NYC school system is somewhat of a nightmare to deal with.

As a matter of fact, if you look at the data of carbon foot print per person per square mile, living in a big city is already significantly greener than living inefficiently spread out all over the country. But that is not the topic...

Teachers are adults. Some are more progressive than others. They send lists home with stuff they would like the kids to bring. They do not think whether these items make environmental sense unless they are people who already care and have reached a mind set that allows them to think about this level of change. I would guess, we are talking about 1% of the population. You think that these caring kind of folks are overrepresented in public schools? From my experience (I teach), they do not. Other things are considered more important. Not any different than anywhere else in North America. I doubt that it will be the current generation of adults that will bring the change in North America.

I think it is an excellent idea to educate teachers about the environment. I do it all the time with my colleagues.
