Green Challenge giveaway: In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
Michael Pollan's new book, In Defense of Food hit the shelves this earlier this year and here's your chance to win your very own copy! You might recognize the author's name from The Omnivore's Dilemma, a successful look at the path food travels to get to the table.
In Defense of Food takes a deeper look into how America eats (in the car, in front of the television) and what our diet consists of (high fructose corn syrup). Pollan tries to answer what he calls the American paradox: the fact that as we get more health obsessed, we are becoming unhealthier as a nation. Because of science and marketing, old fashioned food needs defending from the food industry itself.
In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, Pollan says this: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants. Easy enough.
Upon learning of this month's locavore challenge, The Penguin Press generously sent us a copy of this fine book to give away.

You can only pick one vegetable? Goodness. I really really like spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, butternut squash, and so many more. Hm, if I had to pick one though . . . maybe spinach. Yum!

We loved carrots in this house. They are an easy snack, and I love that they taste so different when cooked!

Onions. They contain Quercetin, one of the most powerful antioxidants with significant anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies show Quercetin helps protect against cancer. On top of all that onions make terrific additions to salads and tomato sauce, add flavor to many dishes and are relatively inexpensive.

My favorite vegetable is any vegetable grown in my backyard. But, if I have to narrow that down - I'd say spinach. No, green beans. No, spinach. ugh.. Spinach. :D

Boy, do I love love love tomatoes. SOOOOOO much. And before anyone tells me they're a fruit, not a vegetable, I'm going to bust out the science. "Vegetable" is a non-technical term referring to savory plant stuff that we eat. "Fruit" is a technical term, describing a fleshy part of a plant that grows from the flower part, and in which the seeds are contained. Thus, a strawberry, a peach, and a banana are indeed fruits in the technical sense, but so are a tomato, a cucumber, a squash, a green bean, and so on. Sorry. I got carried away with the technical talk. :)
The point being, Mmmmmmmmm tomatoes.

For me it's the forbidden fruit. Er, I mean, vegetable. My fiance hates beets (and their greens) so I never get to make them at home. But when we go out, I make up for it. Right now, I'm very into grilled beets. Mmmm..

Unlike some past presidents, my favorite vegetable is broccoli. There are so many ways to fix it but I love it parboiled with a little lemon and a touch of salt!

Choosing a favorite vegetable is difficult. I guess I'd take mushrooms. But I wouldn't want to give any of them up.
