GreenLaces and the Olympics
There has been much talk lately of the Olympics and the work that Beijing has been doing to improve air quality, traffic congestion and other environmental concerns. I don't know about you but while I am certainly concerned about air quality all over the world I am much more interested in the Olympic athletes and the personality they bring to the games. I remember being fascinated by Greg Louganis and his diving in 1988. There is always an athlete that sparks my interest in each Olympic year. This year it's interesting to find out which athletes are doing something to be green.
GreenLaces "aims to unify environmentally conscious individuals, and to leverage athletics to reduce our environmental impact." There is a list of 41 professional or Olympic athletes who have made promised to the environment and are showing their commitment by wearing green laces. Six members of the the US 2008 Olympic Women's Soccer team are wearing green laces. Eight international Olympic athletes are also listed.
Read on to see some of the Olympic athletes promises.
Tom Paradiso of the US Olympic Men's Rowing Team promises to unplug all of his electronics when they are not in use, to remember to take his re-usable grocery bags to the store ALL of the time and to start a compost pile in the yard for food waste.
Jamie Schroeder, also of the US Olympic Men's Rowing Team promises to reuse his plastic water bottles whenever possible, recycle his plastic milk jugs, and eat more vegetables.
Lindsay Shoop of the US Olympic Women's Crew Team promises to continue to recycle and also pick up that stray piece of litter on the ground; and in doing so inspire others to do the same.
GreenLaces cost $5.00 per pair and are made in the US from 100% recycled plastic. The company hopes to have GreenLaces on the shoes of 1,000 Olympic athletes by the end of the Beijing games.
What will your GreenLaces promise be?
