Chinese artillery breaks up haze with anti-smog pellets
With the opening ceremony only 2 days out, Chinese officials are determined to keep Beijing's smog problem from stealing the show at this year's Olympics. In an attempt to bust up the embarrassing haze, officials have limited driving, shut down industry, and even opted for a green fireworks display. Now, they've apparently decided to fall back on a different type of green fireworks. Yesterday evening, as US Olympians arrived in black smog masks, nervous officials launched a barrage of anti-smog pellets to clear the skies. Although the smoggy conditions seem to change from one hour to the next, reports seem to indicate that the skies are significantly clearer today. Whether the pellets were responsible is still up for debate. I have some trouble believing that there really is such a thing as an "anti-smog pellet." Considering the fact that many scientist dispute that idea cloud seeding is an effective way to stimulate rain conditions, seeding to kill smog seems like pure fantasy.
Do you believe the pellets actually worked? Or, did they just get a lucky break?
