Your fridge is not a composter
Newsflash! In case you didn't know this, your fridge is not a composter, says a recent AP report via CNN. But that fact doesn't stop the average household from throwing out about a quarter of the fruits and vegetables that they buy, wasting about $500 per year, according to a recent University of Arizona study. One reason people buy too much is that they perceive themselves as healthier eaters than they really are. Another reason people chuck so many fruits and veggies is that they aren't sure how long they can keep them. Some tips on that:
- If fruit has gone bad, you'll probably know it, from the spots and the smell and feel.
- Throw out the "bad apple" in the bunch, even if you find one right when you get home from the market.
- Store produce as it was displayed at the supermarket.
- Most produce is better left unwashed until right before eating or cooking.
- Don't buy too much just because it's on sale.
