New external hard drive gets green and pretty
External drives are probably not high on your shopping list of stuff you want to buy greener, but every little bit helps - especially when the drive looks this attractive.Fabrik has released the "SimpleTech [re]drive", which is being advertised as the "most energy-efficient, resource-conscious, Turbo USB 2.0 external storage and backup drive.". With claims of a 90% energy-use reduction over other drives, mostly coming from an efficient power supply and a fan-less cooling system, the 500GB high-speed drive appears greener than a lot of other hardware.
While the numbers are impressive, another nifty part of Fabrik's new product is the pretty casing design. External hard-drives are usually clunky, unimaginative chunks of plastic. The "[re]drive" looks great and will not likely hide under your desk. In keeping with a green theme, bamboo, along with recyclable aluminum, give the drive casing a pretty organic look that would fit nicely next to your fern and that mini Zen garden sandbox on your desk.
You've probably noticed a lot of bamboo creeping into design. Not only does bamboo look great, it is also the fastest growing woody plant on the planet making it much more sustainable than most materials we associate with computer hardware.
