Six-legged deer of the apocalypse discovered, survives dog attack
Will wonders never cease? Not only have biologists discovered a six-legged deer living in Rome, Georgia, but the fawn -- only months old -- somehow survived a dog attack and has been captured on video. These are strange times, people.
While I love rehabilitation stories about sea animals with bionic appendages, a deer with two pelvises is even more fascinating. It's not clear yet whether the deer was a product of a genetic irregularity, or if he happened to be living near a radioactive Superfund site. Either way, just like The Simpsons' 3-eyed wonder fish, the irregularity could make the fawn a candidate for the process of natural selection. Is it time for North American deer to gain a set of legs?
This brings up an important question: does a deer gain a significant advantage by having 6 legs? It's hard to say. I'm imagining a ultra-fast super deer with twice the back legs to kick predators with. The veterinarian did mention that he has two tails -- or used to. That's got to account for something.
