Oil's Not Well on the Mississippi
On Thursday a barge carrying 419,000 gallons of heavy fuel began leaking into the Mississippi River near the Crescent City (New Orleans) Connection Bridge. Boat traffic through the area has been halted, and according to some, the area around the French Quarter--usually popular with tourists--stinks of a heavy chemical smell. Officials are worried about the water supply in the city, the spill's effect on the Delta National Wildlife Refugee, what might happen when the fuel reaches the marsh, and the fact that the oil continued to leak into the river well into the afternoon yesterday. The only good... well, not as bad news coming out of this story is that at least one official says this isn't as bad as Exxon-Valdez. Great.
