eBay Green: Homer bag

This week, eBay Green will be examining the latest thing in green shopping: the reusable fabric shopping tote.

Sold at the checkout counter in grocery stores and pharmacies everywhere, consumers are gradually catching on to the green fashion trend.

In fact, you can even get cute and sassy bags, rather than get stuck carrying around a tote advertising the name of your grocery store in the name of a green planet.

Department stores like Target and Wal-Mart have hopped on the bandwagon, and even high-end designers have started making the totes.

It is this trend that brings us to the topic at hand: the Homer bag.

The slogan is "Don't be a Pig" and "Recycle," featuring Homer hugging a pig on a very literally green bag. While the seller seems legitimately concerned about the environment, which is rare for an eBay Green pick, I couldn't help but wonder about the fabric used to make the bag.

"Non-woven polypropylene" might well be used in many of the bags on the market, and so I hit up Wikipedia to learn more about it.

Evidently the bags are recyclable as well as reusable. Unfortunately, they are not biodegradable. Should you buy a few during a green mood and yet fail to insert them into your shopping routine, you might just be adding to the problem.

Still, how can you pass up the timelessly fashionable Kelly green bag featuring Homer Simpson?
