Scotland's fuel theft crimewave
If you're driving through Scotland, it might be time to invest in a locking gas cap. A story in the Sunday Herald reports that the black market for stolen fuel is growing even faster than the price of crude. Apparently, groups of enterprising criminals are rolling through the countryside in giant tanker trucks, stopping to siphon any unguarded gas tanks. At least one truck driver has had his tank emptied as he slept in the cab.The latest wave of fuel theft has caught most people unprepared, since most security cameras and alarm systems weren't designed to monitor fuel tanks. Scottish police are resorting to road blocks to try and take a couple of these siphon trucks off the road. Some thieves have even resulted to drilling holes in storage tanks, taking what they can and then fleeing. According to one victim:
"I would rather give these guys the fuel than have them destroy the tank and then let the rest of the fuel run to waste. It's not just economic loss it causes, but environmental damage."[via Treehugger]
