Ouch: global warming will give you kidney stones
A group of researchers from the University of Texas think they have uncovered one of the "first examples of global warming causing a direct medical consequence for humans," and it's not pretty. Over the next 32 years, researchers say that an additional 1.6 million to 2.2 million Americans will spend some extremely painful time in the bathroom. Yup, you guessed it -- global warming will give us more kidney stones. It's pretty disturbing to think that your chances of getting a bladder stone will rise about 30% by 2050, but that's the prediction. According to the researchers:
"When people relocate from areas of moderate temperature to areas with warmer climates, a rapid increase in stone risk has been observed. This has been shown in military deployments to the Middle East for instance."One study suggested that the "kidney stone belt" -- Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina -- would see the greatest influx. Another set of data projected that the Midwest would see the worst of the trend. Either way, stay hydrated people.
