Odd couple Wal-Mart and WWF team up to save the world's forests
In a surprising (to me anyway) move, Wal-Mart has joined the World Wildlife Fund Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN.) The mission of the group is to "save the world's most valuable and threatened forests" and Wal-Mart just committed to changing their business practices to help them! The forests of the world are rapidly diminishing, with over half already gone. GFTN encourages the use of sustainably-managed wood, and eliminating the market for products made of illegally logged wood. The U.S. uses more paper and wood products than anywhere else in the world. The positive side of this is that we can control the supply by demanding products conform to these guidelines.
This is a lot of work for them, and it's clearly driven by the increasing public demand for green alternatives. Which is fine. I don't need them to have a bleeding, sentimental heart for the environment, I'm just glad to see this kind of eco-aware activity in a mainstream corporation. It's proof that the choices we make every day really do translate into bigger, cumulative results.
Yay for Wal-Mart, and yay for us!
